Dr. Claudia Treviño Garcia brings to Somos Cultura y Más not only decades of experience in education, but also a lifelong connection to community. Growing up in her parents' neighborhood grocery store, she saw firsthand the importance of building relationships, serving others, and creating spaces where people feel seen and valued. Watching her father's famous artist brother, Jesse Treviño build a legacy of art throughout the city also influenced her understanding of the community's culture and history. Those early experiences continue to shape her work today.

As a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Treviño Garcia has spent more than 30 years supporting learners of all ages, from young children taking their first steps in school to future educators earning their doctoral degrees. Her work centers on bilingual education, biliteracy, and helping teachers create classrooms where every child's language, culture, and identity are celebrated.

She currently leads the Bilingual Education Teacher Residency Program at UTSA, where she mentors and prepares the next generation of bilingual educators. Her work focuses on strengthening culturally responsive teaching, supporting new teachers, and expanding high-quality dual language education. As the current President of the San Antonio Area Association for Bilingual Education, Dr. Treviño García extends her commitment, mentoring, and development of the profession to others outside the university walls.

 

Dr. Treviño García remains committed to ensuring that bilingualism, culture, and community are recognized as strengths. She guides the development of Cultura Cards and experiences for Día del Niño and the many workshops offered by Somos Cultura y Más. Her dedication to education is rooted in the same values she learned growing up: service, connection, and a deep belief in the power of community.
